Chapter Nineteen

Veer glanced at Miss Thalia, then back at Messina. Miss Thalia was petrified, that was clear, thinking of the penalties of having broken laws. Messina’s face was the picture of mortified disappointment. She’d called them monsters, and he knew she was including him in that assessment.

In a second, before he could even react, Messina was out the door. He turned to Miss Thalia. “Please. Do not be afraid. You have nothing to worry about. I promise.”

He darted toward the door, then looked back one last time. “I’ll be back. I will.”

He shot out the exit and started after Messina, who clearly was no slouch when it came to running. And now, he found himself cursing that she’d worn shoes that looked comfortable, instead of the high heels he’d first found her in at the landing zone the other day.

The other day? Or was that yesterday? It seemed like he’d been around her for weeks, not just one day. He had to find her. And he wanted to know why a woman who had seemed so calm and collected suddenly lost it and ran off.

Veer could hear footsteps behind him, and a quick look confirmed it was Morson chasing him through the alleys.

“Help me find her, Morson.”

“I will, sir.”
